A Great Father’s Day

On Sunday my family and I, along with friends visiting from Arizona, celebrated my husband’s special day.  We spent it doing all the things we love to do as a family.  We started out with a “little” hike (8-10 miles) up and around the Laguna Beach Wilderness trails, gradually traversing uphill to the Top of the World,” a scenic outlook high above Laguna Beach.  What a view!  It was well worth the extra mile to see the ocean from this vantage point.

After a short break to take in the view and to recharge our batteries, we began to thread our way back down into the steep canyon toward home.  Along the way we saw a small rattlesnake sunning itself on the trail and then about 10 minutes later, a beautiful fawn crossed our path!  We just stood and watched her munch on a green shrub, slowly inching toward her to take pictures.  She was so close and yet did not seem startled by our presence or attempt to run off into the surrounding brush.

Next it was a hearty lunch at legendary Surfer’s eatery Wahoo’s Fish Tacos before heading down to the beach for a few well-earned hours of lounging.  We were all so tired from the hike that we were content just to stare at the breaking waves while the kids frolicked in the surf and built sandcastles.  With the sun beginning to set on the horizon, we finally packed up our things and headed for home, tired but happy from our epic day outdoors!

I have designed a new wall hanging called Peace & Love – I expect to finish the piecing this week.  Please check back in the coming days for a sneak peek of my newest pattern that will debut at the Long Beach Quilt Festival next month on July 23!  My booth number is 1826/1828 check out www.quilts.com for more show info.

Be sure to give hugs and kisses to your loved ones each and everyday!

Travels to Oregon

30th May, 2010 - Posted by cmwhitten - No Comments

I’ve just returned home from a three-day trip to Oregon with my mom and dad to attend a family funeral. Despite the sad occasion, it was an opportunity to take my little boy along to see his aunts, uncles and cousins, many for the first time. It also gave him his first taste Oregon’s forested beauty; to witness first-hand such majestic landmarks as Mt. Hood and Mammoth Falls. He was so cute feeding the Rainbow Trout at the local fish hatchery! His eyes full of wonder was just one of many touching moments during this brief trip.

My grandfather was a brakesman for the UP – I loved this sign posted under a bridge @ Multnomah Falls State Park.

Thank you to my loved ones for making our visit so special.

My Journey…

19th May, 2010 - Posted by cmwhitten - No Comments

I have been quilting since 1999 and started publishing my own patterns in 2004 (click on the About button for my full story). My design philosophy is focused on easy blocks with bright fabrics that tell a great story. While most of my designs are for beginning/intermediate quilters, I have many customers coming back to me year after year asking for my latest designs so that they can make a quilt that looks wonderful but does not take weeks or months to complete.

I tell everyone that I do not make heirloom quilts and that I like doing everything on the sewing machine except for the binding. My quilts are made to be cuddled, loved, to be used for building forts in the kids’ play room, and to be washed over and over again until they are nice and soft!

Last year my 10-year-old daughter bought me a book at her school book fair called “The Cupcake Queen” by Heather Hepler. I asked her why she chose this particular book for me and she said with a straight face: “Because you love cupcakes and everything you do is about cupcakes.” Although not entirely true, she did make a very good point – and in particular, I especially LOVE Red Velvet Cupcakes!

I have designed a number of different cupcake-related quilting projects and at any one time I usually have at least 6-12 cupcake fabrics in-stock. Check out Cupcakery – so you can share in my cupcake obsession.

I’m a mom, a wife, a quilt designer and an avid cupcake lover!

XXOO everyday to the ones you love!
